Scratching Back in Time

November 3, 2012

It’s Saturday night.

We tucked in overtired kids. Smooch, smooch, smooch. We shut doors and came down stairs.

I took my first sip of a large glass of wine and settled in to the work I must catch up on by Monday just as I heard the door open upstairs.

Briggs (sleepily): Mom – can you come scratch my back?

I sighed, loudly, took a swig and slowly started upstairs.

Ned (calmly): Babe, he will stop asking one day.

Louder sigh and another big swig.

I scratched. And listened to what just happened in Chapter 15 of Harry Potter. We snuggled. Another smooch. Closed the door….perhaps a little tighter this time.

As I walked out – this stared me down –

Briggs: Age 3

And as I started down the stairs –

Briggs: Age 2

And on the landing –

Briggs: 7 months

The wine and the work are still waiting for me.

But I paused for a moment and thought about the blink that has been the last 7 years. And how Ned is right – 7 years from now I’ll be scratching at Briggs’ door to be let into his thoughts, for even a few minutes.

This is just one of life’s many tricks. I guess at least realizing it is happening provides some comfort. There isn’t one right answer, but awareness is a strong first step.

And hopefully tonight, Briggs and I both have sweet dreams.

I love this, such a great expression of the truth. I am glad you were able to take a minute and appreciate it for what it was. Those children are lucky to have you for a mom.

We’re all doing out best at that crazy life juggle – being in the present, creating awesome futures, relishing the beauty in the past…:) sometimes those sips/swigs of wine really help. 🙂

Thanks for the reminder that time flies and we should enjoy each moment as much as we can. We have an 8 year old daughter and thought that was it for us. Looking back, as a first time parents and all the jitters that come with it, we realize we wished certain phases would hurry up and pass. Now the second time around we know better…how quickly it all goes. We are truly trying to cherish every moment with our 17 month old….the good, the bad and the ugly because we know it will all be over before we know it. 🙂

So true Christine! So wise of you to be able to be in the moment with your sweet babes. xo

I have a 14 year old girl in Middle School. I still scratch her back at night. What is when she opens up and tells me the good, the bad and the ugly. I am so glad that she can unload on me! I have heard hilarious stories about her classmates and I savor every minute. This time is going so fast!

Ahh Julie – that’s so promising. 🙂 Sounds like sacred time for both of you.
